Most visibility problems are not dashboard problems. They show up when different machines report the same signal in different ways, or when nobody agreed what “idle” or “productive hours” should mean.
Start with the definition, not the hardware. On a carrier, running hours usually means the engine turned over. On a hydraulic breaker there is no engine to ask, so SolidTrack derives recorded activity from motion telemetry, which is a different measure and gives a different number. Teams that skip this conversation spend the first month arguing about whose figure is right.
A practical baseline starts with a small set of assets that represent your real mix of brands, ages and job types. You validate mounting position, signal conditions and reporting cadence there before you ask the wider organization to trust the numbers.
Mounting deserves more attention than it usually gets. A unit buried in steel can lose satellite view and struggle to transmit. The Field Unit is rated for up to 8 g of shock and vibration, but it still belongs away from direct impact. Either mistake can produce data that looks like a software fault and is not.
Name things once and name them properly. An asset called by its serial number is unreadable to the supervisor who knows it as the big hammer on the west face. Every report, alert and comparison inherits that naming decision, and renaming a fleet after six months of history is nobody's favorite afternoon.
Agree the reporting window too. Utilization over a calendar month and utilization over a working week answer different questions, and a machine that looks under-used across thirty days can be fully committed across the twelve it was actually on site.
Once baselines are stable, maps, alerts and utilization views start to agree with what supervisors already see on site. That alignment is what turns telemetry from a project into a daily tool, and it is almost always cheaper to establish on five machines than to retrofit across fifty.
